1. Tonari no Totoro (1988)

Tonari no Totoro is a fantasy anime film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and released in 1988. Even though it is an old anime, this film often fills the list of most recommended Ghibli films. Set in the 1950s, this anime tells the story of a university professor who moves to an old house in the countryside with his two children, Satsuki and Mei, and then they begin to interact with forest spirits.

The sweet and gentle characters of Tonari no Totoro will be loved by children. This anime also provides a charming and exciting atmosphere where children can explore and use their imagination. However, this anime also presents the anxiety that children usually feel when they see one of their family members lying helpless in a hospital bed.

2. Gake no Ue no Ponyo (2008)

With a duration of approximately 101 minutes, Gake no Ue no Ponyo presents a fantasy adventure story which was released in 2008 and is Hayao’s tenth film. This anime begins when a boy named Sosuke rescues a young goldfish princess, Brunhilde, who was trapped in a glass jar while secretly exploring a forbidden surface. This anime will take the audience to witness how Ponyo’s desire grows into a strong desire.

For children who are fans of the film The Little Mermaid, Gake no Ue no Ponyo is a suitable choice to watch next. Apart from the similarities between them being based on original fairy tales, this anime also encourages children to keep moving forward in achieving their dreams. 3. Karigurashi no Arrietty (2010)

Karigurashi no Arrietty is a fantasy genre anime film released in 2010 and is the debut work of a director named Hiromasa Yonebayashii. This anime is based on the novel The Borrowers which was published in 1952 by Mary Norton. This anime centers on a very small girl named Arrietty and her family who live in a hidden corner of a house on the outskirts of town.

Karigurashi no Arrietty brings Arrietty face to face with the son of the owner of the house named Sho who she lives with in secret and they begin to become friends, but he and his family could also be threatened. From start to finish, this anime presents a charming storyline about the importance of family and friendship. However, the main message this anime wants to convey is the importance of being kind and considerate to other people.

Even though anime shows cartoon characters that children usually like, in fact there are many anime that are not suitable for children to watch. However, this is not the case with the three Ghibli anime listed above.
