Montevideo is the vibrant capital of Uruguay, enjoying a sub-tropical climate despite being the most southerly capital city in the Americas. With direct flights from Miami, Madrid, and Paris or via local hubs Santiago, Lima, and Buenos Aires, the city is easy to reach – you can even use Avios to fly with Iberia.
Wherever you decide to stay, book via our luxury travel concierge. The city revolves around the Plaza de la Independencia, leading to the old town with art deco buildings and Spanish colonial homes. The Solis Theatre is the oldest in South America, and there are numerous cinemas reflecting Montevideo’s stars as the center of Uruguay’s film industry. At 27 km, The Rambla is one of the longest esplanades in the world and an important part of the life of the town. Perfect for posing, walking, or even rollerskating at any time of day.
Style & Character
The Hyatt Centric Montevideo was the first hotel outside North America to bear Hyatt’s new Centric brand. Ideally located in the charming Pocitos area, just steps from beautiful sandy beaches, the Centric is ideal for travelers who appreciate modern design and top service. The hotel is a newcomer to the city but is fast gathering a reputation as the best place in town.
Rooms at the hotel start at a very generous 37-45 square meters and feature a separate seating area with floor-to-ceiling windows (choose the View rooms to enjoy the wide vistas of the Plata river mouth). Deluxe rooms are larger and feature a kitchenette – perfect for longer stays or fussy eaters. It is well worth paying a little extra for a Club Room, which provides access to the lounge with a light breakfast, evening drinks, and canapés included.
Our pick for summer stays is the Terrace Suite, which has a spacious private terrace offering a choice of seating plus access to the Club lounge.
Service & Facilities
To burn off the delicious food, the hotel has a well-equipped gym with Life-Fitness equipment or you can enjoy a jog along the Rambla pathway, which runs along the Uruguayan coast. The hotel has an indoor heated pool, relaxation area, and massage suite for something more relaxing.
Montevideo is a bustling city with a rich culture, stunning beach views, and plenty for tourists to see and do, from theatres to museums to visiting a local vineyard, such as the family-owned Bodega Bouza Winery. A day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Colonia is also highly recommended.
Food & Drink
When it comes to dining, you are spoilt for choice. The hotel’s Deli is perfect for a light meal with grab-and-go meals or sweet treats – you can’t go wrong with the decadent chocolate macaroon. Alternatively, Moderno Bar has a great range of gourmet small plate tasters to accompany a craft beer or local wine and offers a delicious afternoon tea – with a perfect 5/5 rating on Facebook, you will surely be in for a treat. The hotel’s signature restaurant Plantado serves all-day dining from an open kitchen. Offering local specialties and international favorites, there is something to please all palates – we recommend freshly caught fish for dinner and smoked pork loin for breakfast. There are numerous Michelin-recommended restaurants outside the hotel, including the 1-starred part-restaurant part-museum Gellius for higher-end dining or the highly-rated nearby Tandory for something more casual.
