Coming to Manchester United? Ralf Rangnick’s ‘wheel of misfortune’ which includes 11 forfeits for players

Ralf Rangnick named as interim Manchester United manager

Manchester United have wasted little time in finding a replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The club confirmed on Monday that Ralf Rangnick, known by most for his impressive work with the Red Bull clubs (Leipzig and Salzburg), is set to become their interim manager for the remainder of this season and will then transition into a consultancy role for another two years:

Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season, subject to work visa requirements. Following this period, Ralf and the club have agreed that he will continue in a consultancy role for a further two years.

Rangnick’s wheel of misfortune

Rangnick’s last managerial role would see him at German outfit RB Leipzig between 2018 and 2019.

During his stint there, Rangnick is said to have implemented a pretty interesting way to punish his players.

In general, players are usually punished via some form of fines. However, Rangnick himself has previously stated his belief that these are not that effective:

“Fines rarely bring anything. It hurts the players more when they have less time.”

This may explain why Rangnick implemented a ‘wheel of misfortune’ during his stint with Leipzig.

The idea itself was said to have been had by Rangnick’s assistant at the time, Jesse March, who was inspired by the game ‘Wheel of Fortune’.

There are 12 segments on the wheel, one of which is ‘Get Lucky’, which is like a get out of jail free card.

The remaining 11 segments are all some form of punishment and include pumping up balls, spending four hours training an academy team, cutting the grass and filling water bottles.

Elsewhere, players are made to wear a tutu, forced to be stadium tour guides, work in the club shop, serve food in the team canteen, help the kitman, loading the team bus and the final punishment is buying up to 60 members of staff a small gift

With Rangnick now set to take the reins in Manchester, it will be interesting to see if the German implements the same game for United players.
