Real Madrid vs Athletic Club
Real Madrid are set to play host to Athletic Club in a La Liga clash this coming Wednesday.
Los Blancos head into the midweek action sat top of La Liga having lost just one of their opening 14 outings.
However, Real Madrid’s city rivals, Atletico Madrid, are not too far behind them. Diego Simeone’s men are sat on 29 points from 14 ties, whilst Real Sociedad are also on 29 but have played one more game than the Madrid clubs.
So, with not too much separating the top three sides in La Liga at present, Real cannot afford any slipups.
As a result, they will no doubt be eager to keep their good run going this week against a side who have failed to win any of their last five league games.
Ancelotti speaks out on Ballon d’Or
Now, when speaking to the media ahead of his side’s clash with Athletic Club, Carlo Ancelotti was drawn on the Ballon d’Or.
Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema finished 4th in the competition’s rankings this year but Ancelotti insisted that eventual winner Lionel Messi is a great player and that there is nothing to add.
The Italian also stated Benzema did a great job and will continue with the motivation to try and be first:
“You have to give credit to the result [of the 2021 Ballon d’Or]. Messi has won and remains a great player. And there is nothing to add.
“For the players the individual awards are important, but if they don’t win it that’s okay. I hope next year a Real Madrid player wins it. Benzema has done a great job. season and finished fourth. He’ll continue with the motivation to try to be first.”
