Messi makes it 7
The award ceremony for the 2021 Ballon d’Or took place on Monday evening.
The coveted prize did not have a winner in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, but was back this year and saw a familiar face pick up the award.
Following Italy’s Euro 202 triumph and Chelsea’s Champions League win, there was some talk of Jorginho potentially being in the running to claim the prize.
However, we would once again see Lionel Messi named as the Ballon d’Or winner this year.
The Argentine picked up a record-breaking 7th Ballon d’Or, a feat which seems unlikely to be matched for many, many years.

Lionel Messi taken ill
After bagging his latest award, Messi was expected to turn his attentions towards PSG’s meeting with Nice on Wednesday evening.
PSG head into the clash sitting pretty atop of the Ligue 1 table with 40 points and a 12-point lead over second.
However, Nice are currently 3rd in the French top-flight and are expected to prove a stern test for the Parisian outfit, who are already without the services of Neymar following his horrid-looking injury suffered over the weekend.
Now, it appears Lionel Messi could also be something of a doubt as PSG reported on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the Argentine picked up his Ballon d’Or, that he missed out on training due to symptoms of gastroenteritis:
“Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes did not participate in the training session today due to symptoms of gastroenteritis. A further check will be made tomorrow morning.”
