Denmark at Euro 2022: Will 2017’s runners-up go all the way this summer?

After a fantastic run at the most recent European Championships, are Denmark one of the favourites to lift the trophy this summer?

Five years ago, De rød-hvide reached their first-ever major final courtesy of wins over Belgium, Norway, holders Germany and then Austria on penalties.

However, despite leading early, they couldn’t claim the trophy, beaten 4-2 by hosts Netherlands at De Grolsch Veste

Having previously reached the semi-finals of this tournament in 1984, 1991, 1993, 2001 and 2013, Denmark look likely to be serious contenders again.

Despite all this continental success, the Red-Whites haven’t appeared at a World Cup since 2007, although that exile will come to an end next year.

They’ve won all seven World Cup qualifiers to date and are guaranteed a place at next summer’s tournament in Australia & New Zealand.

To reach this competition, de rød-hvide also impressed, winning nine of ten matches, only dropping points when Italy visited Viborg.

In short, Lars Søndergaard’s team have the pedigree and the form, but are still outsiders when it comes to knockout phase qualification.

That’s because they’re joined in Group B by record eight-times winners Germany and tournament favourites Spain.

With their fixture against Finland pretty-much a gimme, Denmark’s two matches in London against the group’s big two will be decisive.

They open up their campaign at the Brentford Community Stadium against Germany, with the loser of that one in immediate danger of elimination.

Key players: Sofie Junge Pedersen

One of the starters from the last European Championships Final who is still around, Sofie Junge Pedersen remains a key figure for her nation.

Since making her senior debut 11 years ago, Junge has accumulated 78 international caps and this’ll be her third Euro campaign.

The 30 year old has featured in Denmark’s last 24 internationals, last sitting one out in April 2019, with her most recent goal coming in September 2020.

But she’s not in the team to score goals with Junge’s primary job to dictate play and create chances for their star attackers.

At club level, Junge has spent the last three and a half seasons with Juventus, winning a hat-trick of Serie A titles and seven trophies overall.

Having come so close five years ago, can she help Denmark to Euro success on 31 July at Wembley?

Key players: Pernille Harder

If Denmark are going to be serious contenders at this tournament, they’ll be reliant on Pernille Harder for goals.

The captain has now scored 68 international goals, breaking Merete Pedersen’s record of 65 against Malta back in September.

Harder scored a hat-trick on her senior debut against Georgia in 2009, netting in vain during the Euro Final defeat five summers ago.

For her clubs, she’s now won 16 major trophies, including eight with Wolfsburg and five while representing current employers Chelsea.

This season saw Harder pick up a second successive WSL title, scoring 31 goals in 65 appearances since joining the Blues.

Alongside that Euro defeat in 2017, Harder has lost in three Champions League Finals, twice with Wolfsburg and then in 2021 with Chelsea.

So, the 29 year hasn’t had much luck when it comes to UEFA competitions, something she’d love to change at Wembley this summer.

Key players: Nadia Nadim

One of the most interesting and inspirational figures in women’s football, Nadia Nadim remains one of Denmark’s key figures on the field too.

She was born and raised in Afghanistan until, in 2000, her father was executed by the Taliban, leading to her family fleeing to Denmark.

As an adult, Nadim has spoken-out against Qatar’ sports-washing, is a qualified doctor and fluently speaks nine languages.

On the pitch, now 34, she’s still a high-class performer.

At club-level, Nadim has represented some of the biggest clubs on the planet, namely Gotham FC, Portland Thorns, Manchester City and PSG.

Last year, she returned State-side with Racing Louisville, scoring a brace off the bench in a recent draw at Washington Spirit.

For Denmark, she’s now surpassed 100 caps, looking to add to her 38 goals, nine of which have come during the ongoing World Cup qualifying cycle.

Even in the twilight of her career, Nadim remains a key part of this Danish machine.
